What Children Want to Know About Loose Teeth

Loose teeth are something that we’ve all dealt with – you may remember your own loose teeth, especially your first one. Quite possibly, you can recall all the questions you had: Can I wiggle it? Will it hurt when it falls out? Why is it loose?

If you’re a parent, these are the very questions you’ll be asked once your child experiences loose teeth of their own. And if you’re worried that you don’t know how to properly handle these and other questions, don’t worry – the team at Southeast Dental is here to help!

First of all, it is perfectly safe for them to wiggle their loose teeth. This can actually loosen the tooth further, making it easier to become unattached when it’s ready. However, attempting to pull out the loose tooth before it wants to come out can be a bad idea. It may be painful and can potentially cause infection.

If your child is wondering why the tooth is loose in the first place, explain that their adult permanent teeth are ready to come in, and so the baby teeth come out to make room for them. It’s a big part of growing up! And promising a visit from the Tooth Fairy is often reason enough for kids.

Worrying about pain is another natural part of the process for children. In some cases, kids are so scared that the tooth coming out will hurt that they try to keep the tooth right where it is for as long as possible. In this case, it’s important to reassure them that if they let the tooth come out when it’s ready, they’ll likely only feel a slight pull. Sometimes they won’t feel it at all, and that brings up another common question – what if your child swallows the tooth? If this happens, don’t panic. It sounds strange, but teeth are able to pass safely through the system and won’t cause any harm at all.

As always, regular dental check-ups and cleanings are important throughout the process of loosing baby teeth. Southeast Dental in Markham is here to answer any questions you or your child may have about baby teeth and adult teeth – contact us at 905-471-2002 or online via our appointment form.
