Keeping Your Smile Healthy This Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a celebration of those you love. This often means showing others you care for them, via gifts of cards, flowers, and of course chocolates and candy. But like all holidays that see an influx of sugary treats, it can mean a higher chance of cavities and other oral health problems. But there are ways to enjoy these sweets without causing damage to your teeth. Here are a few to help you this Valentine’s Day.

Keep Brushing – Keeping up your regular daily brushing and flossing is always important, but especially when you’re introducing more sugar into your diet. It’s also a good idea to brush right after eating the Valentine’s chocolates and candy, so you can remove to sugars before they turn into cavity-causing bacteria.

Pace Yourself – Did your loved ones spoil you? Lucky! But even if you were given a large amount of sweets, it doesn’t mean that you need to eat them all at once (though we’re know it can be difficult not to). Try to pace yourself, that way you won’t overload your mouth with harmful sugars – plus, it makes the treats last longer. That means an extended Valentine’s Day celebration.

Make A New Rule – There’s no hard rule that candy must be a part of everyone’s Valentine’s Day. If you prefer to go to the non-sugar route, it’s perfectly fine to ask your partner or loved ones to avoid buying candy, and stick to other items instead.

Book a Cleaning – If these tips weren’t enough – or the candy won out – your smile team at Southeast Dental in Markham is always here to help ensure your mouth is its healthiest. Book a full cleaning for after Valentine’s Day. Give us a call at 905-471-2002 or make an appointment online via our form.

Have a great Valentine’s Day!
