Banishing Bad Breath

Bad breath happens to everyone, at some point. But for some people, it’s not just an occasional problem – it’s constant, and doesn’t seem to go away. But there are options for everyone, whether suffering from mild halitosis or the more severe cases.

To start, brushing and flossing daily is important. It may seem like an obvious answer, but if your daily routine isn’t up to par your potential for bad breath is much higher. Brushing twice per day for two minutes each time and flossing at least once daily is the foundation of good oral hygiene.

From there, if bad breath continues to be an issue, trying mouthwash is a good next step. Some mouthwashes merely cover bad breath with a fresh minty taste, but others have anti-bacterial properties that help to eliminate what is actually causing the odour.

The tongue itself is a big part of our oral health, and bacteria and food particles will collect there and form a film. This sticky, white film is a very common reason for bad breath, but it’s easy to deal with by making sure to clean your tongue every time you brush – either by using your toothbrush itself, or by purchasing a tongue scraper if you’re comfortable using one.

The foods you eat also have an impact on your breath. Of course, certain foods can cause more odours than others, but there are also foods you can eat that will help to freshen your breath. Crunchy veggies, mint leaves and parsley are all helpful, along with water to keep your mouth rinsed.

Lastly, your regular dental check-ups are also vital to keep halitosis at bay. A proper cleaning and inspection will ensure that there are no underlying oral problems. If all else fails, speak to your dentist and doctor about what other possible health issue may be causing the halitosis. Working together with your health professionals, you can kick bad breath to the curb.
