Everyone brushes their teeth each day (at least we hope they do!). But how many are brushing properly, to make it most effective for a healthy, clean mouth? We’ve outlined the steps needed to make sure you’re getting the most out of your twice daily brushing:
- Choose the right brush:
As we mentioned in a past blog post, choosing the right toothbrush for your teeth is important. Often soft bristles are best, but it’s also a smart idea to find one that is comfortable to hold, with a shape that fits your mouth well. Be sure to replace your brush every 3-4 months.
- Pick toothpaste that will work for you:
Whitening, plaque fighting, sensitive, tartar control – the list of available toothpastes seems never-ending. With a little bit of research – and our handy post to help you – you can find out which type suits your oral care needs. What’s great about current offerings is that you can now find toothpaste that focuses on multiple needs at once.
- Watch the clock:
Unfortunately, most people do not brush their teeth long enough. Experts agree that the right amount of time to brush is for two minutes, at least twice per day. If it’s hard to know when you’ve reached the two minute mark, you can use a stopwatch to help you – there are even electric toothbrushes that now have timers built right in so you always brush for the right amount of time.
- All about angles:
The way you hold your toothbrush is important when it comes to properly cleaning your teeth. When brushing, you should keep your brush at a 45 degree angle to the gums and gently brush downward, away from the gumline. Brush the outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of each tooth. Don’t forget the tongue!
- Be gentle:
This is an important tip – always use gentle brush strokes when brushing your teeth. Brushing hard will not make your teeth cleaner, but it can cause dental problems. When you brush too hard to get your teeth clean, it can actually can damage or wear down the enamel.
Of course, proper tooth brushing is most effective when paired with regular dental cleanings and check-ups. Book your next cleaning at Southeast Dental in Markham, via our online form or by phone at 905-471-2002.
