While it is recommended that you visit the dentist regularly, there are also many reasons why some people don’t – lack of dental coverage, a busy schedule, and even fear of the dentist can all play a part. But if you’ve made the decision to make a dental visit after a very long dental hiatus, it can be a bit of a process. Here are some things you can expect on your first visit back.
X-Rays: Because you haven’t visited the dentist in awhile, they’ll likely need an xray of your mouth to see if there are any changes or problems. If you’re afraid of pain, not to worry – x-rays are completely painless and very quick.
Nervousness: Feeling anxious is completely normal and to be expected. If you’re feeling nervous, tell your hygienist and they will help walk you through the process. Remember that the goal of the dental team is to help keep you and your mouth healthy, so there’s no need to be nervous.
Questions: There will likely be a lot of questions, both from your dental team and from you. They’ll ask what your dental routine is like, if you have any concerns or have noticed any changes, etc. And, of course, they’re there to answer any questions you may have.
Tips from your Dental Team: You can expect some helpful tips from your hygienist and dentist, to ensure that you’re making the most of your brushing, flossing, and general mouth care. They may have recommendations for certain types of toothpastes or toothbrushes, and let you know if there are any areas to concentrate on.
