Dental Care for Adolescents

As we’ve mentioned in past posts, dental care changes at different ages. We have discussed proper care for babies, children, and seniors – and in this blog post we’re tackling dental needs of adolescents.

Going through puberty means that teens are experiencing many hormonal changes. What isn’t commonly known is that these hormones can put adolescents at a higher risk for periodontal diseases. This is due to increased blood circulation in the gums, and so proper daily dental hygiene is imperative to help prevent complications.

But, of course, that may not be what your teen is concerned about when it comes to their mouths. Since their social lives tend to be most important at that age, bad breath is a big factor for their oral health (and may actually make them want to brush). While it may be easy for them to forgo brushing and flossing to catch a few extra minutes of sleep each morning, a regular routine of teeth cleaning day and night will help keep bad breath at bay.

For teens with braces, they can have a difficult time cleaning their teeth due to the wires getting in the way. But since food particles become stuck in the braces, bacteria build-up and cavities can become a problem. Careful brushing followed by a floss-threader can help to remove plaque, and rinsing afterward with a mouthwash is a good idea to clean those hard to reach spots.

Another issue for adolescents is tooth decay due to bad dietary habits. It’s not uncommon for teens to enjoy sugary drinks, sweets, and greasy snacks. To help prevent cavities due to bacteria from these foods, regular brushing and flossing should be paired with some healthier food options – a bonus when those snacks can also help clean teeth, like apples do.

Of course, regular dental visits can help keep your teen’s oral health on track. Your dentist can offer insights and tips to keep their mouths cavity-free, and ensure that they follow a routine to suit their individual needs.
