What Healthy Gums Look Like

In general, we concentrate a lot on what our teeth look like – if they’re clean, white, straight, etc. But do you ever think about what your gums should look like? Their appearance can actually tell you a lot about their health, and what your dental routine may be lacking. Here’s a checklist of things to look out for, to make sure your gums stay healthy:

Colour:

Healthy gums can range from pink to a brown colour, depending on your skin’s pigmentation. But if you find that they have become red, it may indicate gingivitis or other periodontal diseases. Lighter colours, like a very pale pink or white, can potentially mean anemia.

Firmness:

Though not technically appearance, the firmness of your gums can also tell you a lot about their health. They should be firm, and not move when touched – if they become soft and pliable, or even start bleeding, it could be caused by gingivitis.

Recession:

If you notice that your gums are receding – or pulling away – from your teeth, a visit to the dentist may be in order. It could be caused by periodontitis that has become severe, and will need to be treated accordingly.

Swelling:

Swollen, puffy gums often occur when gingivitis is present. At times, the gums may even be tender or slightly painful to the touch and bleed easily as mentioned above.

While some may avoid brushing gums or daily flossing when the gums are sensitive or swollen, it’s important to continue to clean and care for them. Often gum disease is caused by a lack of flossing, and improper daily brushing.
